Lemosho 8 Day via Western Breach
with crater night
(L8WB-C)
WHY THIS ITINERARY?
The more adventurous version of the 8 day Lemosho route for those that specifically want to ascend the Western Breach - note that this area has an increased level of risk and requires guests to sign a separate waiver. Nevertheless, it is a superb route for the right type of guest.
DESCRIPTION
Starting on the Western side of Kilimanjaro at the Lemosho trail head, this route follows the first half of the Lemosho Trail until reaching Lava Tower. At this point the route ascends straight up the side of the mountain to the crater floor passing sleeping glaciers on the way. From the Crater, the route to the summit is the shortest of all routes, which makes the summit day much less tiring.
Please note: This route is inherently more dangerous than other routes for 2 reasons. Firstly, the amount of time spent at high altitude and accessing the western breach. This route should only be undertaken by fit individuals with experience of altitude and adventurous training.
HIGHLIGHTS
Kilimanjaro! afromontane forest, Shira plateau, glacial valleys and alpine desert, the Western Breach, glaciers, ascent of Kibo and views of Kibo caldera and ash pit.

Crossing the Shira plateau can be one of the most scenic parts of the trip and this morning we hike for around 4-5 hours to Moir Camp, where lunch is taken. DAY 6 – CRATER CAMP
START – 16,0871FT / 4903M
END – 18,866FT / 5750M
DISTANCE – 2 MILES / 3KM
TIME – 6-8 HRS

The starting time this morning will be dependent on the previous day's guides assessment of the weather, temperature, ice and snowfall conditions. All ascents are relatively early to avoid the part of the day when significant thawing occurs. Ascent to the crater floor takes around 4 to 6 hours and a picnic refuel stop is taken near the top of the breach wall. Once on the crater floor there is time to rest and for those that are feeling strong a hike to the ash pit is a superb option.
